Traditional Chinese Medicine
Acupuncture is only one aspect of Traditional Oriental Medicine.
Patients visiting my clinic may expect to be treated with one or more of the following traditional elements of Chinese Medicine:
-
Acupuncture: the insertion of fine needles at designated acupuncture points.
-
Cupping: the placement of glass, or bamboo cups on the skin with a vacuum.
-
Moxa: the burning of an herb called mugwort, on or near an acupuncture point.
-
Plum blossum or seven star: the light tapping of an area of the body with a small sterile hammer which has seven points.
-
Tuina: Chinese massage technique utilizing the acupuncture points and meridians.
-
Dietary & lifestyle advice based upon TCM philosophy.
Nutrition & Lifestyle
Improvement and maintenance of health may require attention to a variety of factors including: emotional, environmental, dietary and physical factors. Because of their circumstances, patients often find changes in these areas difficult to make. Why choose Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Chinese Medicine is Holistic
It is probably one of the most Holistic medical systems available today.
This means that it takes an integrated view of the person. Mind, body and emotions are seen to interact and affect each other.
Treatment is Specific to the Patient
Chinese Medicine looks at the disease and the person. People are unique with different strengths and weaknesses, therefore a disease pattern can be specific to them. Chinese Medicine has the capacity to give a unique diagnosis and corresponding treatment specific to the person.
Chinese Medicine helps prevent disease
The aim of treatment, in additon to relieving the main symptoms, is to restore overall harmony and health to the individual. It can therefore be used to prevent illness and enhance longevity.
TCM allows patients to understand their disease process
TCM is based on direct observation of health and disease, it relies more on patient information than diagnostic tests. Treatment is not something which is done 'to' the patient, but is given in partnership with the patient's own developing understanding of their disease and health processes.
